(Is Money Good or Bad?)

"Right" Thinking About Money

If you're going to take Christian Fundraising seriously, you're going to have to get your thinking right about money.

Is money good or is it bad? There are many who believe it is bad. They are usually the ones who don't have any!

Others hold that money is good.

In reality, money is neither good nor bad. It is neutral. It becomes good or bad depending on how one uses it.

I could go out and spend a dollar to buy a wicked novel, read it, consequently polluting my mind and causing me to do evil things.

That would be bad.

I could go out and buy a pack of cigarettes with it and eventually get cancer. I could buy a bottle of beer or a shot of whiskey. That would be bad.

On the other hand, I could buy some Gospel tracts. I could give out these tracts. Something good could come from someone reading it. Someone might even get saved.

That would be great, wouldn't it?

If I invested money in a tape that had a good Gospel message on it and let someone listen to the tape, perhaps they would get saved or be helped spiritually by such a message. I could give money to missions. That would be good.

The dollar therefore is neither bad nor good. It becomes bad or good according to how one thinks about it and what one does with it. Money is a good servant, but it is a poor master. If I have it, that is good. If it has me, that is bad.

So, Christian Fundraising for "right" purposes with right thinking about money is good; But, for the wrong reasons, is evil.

What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:6-10, "But godliness with contentment is great gain.

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out.

And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

And in Verses 17-19...

"Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing communicate;

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life."
